Indian Star Basket (or pillow): new overlay crochet pattern

Indian Star Basket design was inspired by Native American textile and fiber art. I don’t really know if it’s a global trend at the moment, but I have noticed that today more and more designing companies (making clothes and interior accessories) look into the “tribal” theme. I can see lots of geometry in today’s design. I browsed images on Pinterest and fell in love with these geometrical ornaments. And decided to create something myself.

Just to make it clear, I didn’t intend to recreate real Native American patterns or symbols. And my own design doesn’t have any deep meaning. It’s just a colorful ornament I had fun with.

My first idea was to create a basket. Baskets and other containers, boxes are always good. They help to keep yarn and wips in order, they can be used in the kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms in the kids rooms. They help to organize everyday’s chaos and at the same time add beautiful colorful accents to our interiors.

Indian Star Basket is made in overlay crochet technique with lots of front post stitches which give it a nice structure and create ornamental pattern on the plain background. The basket’s size can be easily adjusted, and you can make a smaller/taller one (which can also serve as a crochet vase), or wider and bigger.

Indian Star Basket pattern is available in my Ravelry store HERE on Etsy HERE with 30% discount through Monday, May 29 (no coupon code needed)

So that basket keeps its shape well and its sides don’t collapse (it’s important especially for large pieces) it is recommended to line it with a sturdy fabric. One the testers, Lori Baran, who helped me to polish the pattern, used old jeans fabric to line her basket. And it worked out just great!
Indian Star Basket overlay crochet pattern can be also used to make a pillow throw or a small pouch. Original design by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Stiff and sturdy yarns are recommended since it’s a basket and it should be sturdy. I used Bloom (worsted yarn) by Scheepjes, which is 100% cotton and comes in a range of bright and happy colors. You can check this yarn in local Scheepjes shops, at Wool Warehouse* and Deramores*. 4.5mm Amour Clover hook* worked best for me but you can of course choose any other size which will give you acceptable gauge.

As I mentioned, Indian Star overlay crochet pattern can be used not only for baskets. When my own basket was finished I thought it might be nice to try the same pattern for a pillow. It is worked in the same way as the basket (in rounds) but the bottom part is skipped. To save yarn I only made star ornaments on the front of my new pillow throw. And the rest was crocheted with just single crochet stitches (US term) and ribbed stripes.

A complete tutorial about how to make a pillow is also included to the pattern. I used Soft Fun* (DK) yarn by Scheepjes and 4mm (G) crochet hook, and the pillow turned to be approx. 40cm/16” large.

After pillow throw was ready I thought why not to try something with just ribbed stripes. And this is how my make-up pouch was created. I just followed instructions for ribbed stripe and crocheted in round. When the desired height was reached, I sew the bottom with tapestry needle and yarn in same color as first rounds and inserted a zip into the upped edge (same as for pillow). Ta-daaah! Here it is!

I just love when crochet patterns can be used in many ways and I always try to adjust my own patterns. And I think Indian Star Basket is a very nice example.

Crochet Potholders: art in small (FREE pattern)

When I only began creating my own designs they were primarily crochet coasters. One of my testers who helped me with several tests wrote to me one day: Why coasters? Why not potholders? They are so great and can be used in many ways! And I thought – really, why not? And since then I have something special for creating potholders. For me each of them is a complete small “art” object. They are usually made very quickly and make perfect gifts.

Tulip Potholder - FREE crochet pattern by LillaBjornCrochet

Do I use potholders in the kitchen myself? No, I don’t! I would not stand spoiling beautiful cotton yarns. And I would not stand seeing them dirty, and “washed out”. I would rather hang them on the wall, and enjoy looking at them.

I have designed quite a few potholders already. For example, Mandala Potholder, Stained Glass potholder, Kaleidoscope potholder, Wheel of Magic potholder, Mint Coffee Mandala potholder, Nothern Lights potholder... All patterns are available in my Ravelry and Etsy shops.
Mandala Potholders - crochet patterns by www.LillaBjornCrochet.com

My latest creation is Tulip potholder designed for April Issue, 2017 of Knotions Magazine. It has a square shape and can be made in any size. In fact it’s an “endless square” and you can use the pattern to create larger pieces, like cushions or even blankets.

I used 100% cotton yarn Catona (by Scheepjes) in 4 shades: 251 (46g – for 2 layers), 205 (16g), 263 (14g), 257 (10g). Of course, you can choose more colors, and use leftovers from your stash. Clover Soft Touch* crochet hook 2.75mm (C) worked best for me. But since gauge is not critical for this pattern, you can choose different sizes. Just please be aware that potholder should stay flat.

Catona yarn is available at Wool Warehouse* and Deramores* (both in UK with international shipping),  Knotty House* (Canada), Loveknitting* (US), and in your local Scheepjes shops.

I like when potholders are “lined” with the bottom layer, and have a loop for hanging on a wall. I chose pink yarn for bottom layer of Tulip potholder.

The pattern contains written instructions and step-by-step pictures. It’s available for FREE on Knotions Magazine website HERE. Enjoy :)

Extreme crochet in traffic jams: birth of a new blanket design

$

Do you often crochet in a car? I don’t have driving license, and we usually don’t travel far by car. Two-three hours at maximum. But last month our family made a first long journey by car. My almost 6 years old son is a huge fan of LEGO. And when I say “huge fan”, I mean it. We have Lego pieces literally around the entire apartment. I find them every day in unexpected places. And I gave up to clean them… We have been thinking about going to Legoland for quite a while already. And last month we finally did it.
Baby Blanket - crochet design by www.llillabjorncrochet.com

Nearest Legoland from us is located in Germany, which is 6-7 hours drive. I wanted to be prepared for such a long journey and packed big bag with yarns hoping to work on something new. My husband was very happy about this idea, as I was too busy to distract him from driving and didn’t ask hundreds of questions every second.

We got into several traffic jams in the Czech republic and then in Germany, so I had plenty of time to crochet. And apparently I came up with a new design. Below you can see pictures from our drive on the way to and from Legoland (I made lots of progress and got a clear idea of what I want to make, and how to combine the colors).
Baby Blanket - crochet design by www.llillabjorncrochet.com

I was planning to design a baby blanket, and I chose premium acrylic yarn Colour Crafter by Scheepjes. I worked with this yarn a few times already, and it changed my thoughts about acrylic yarns in general. You can check my Birthday in Malmö blanket. Me and my son are using it every day and there are no signs of pilling. It’s not scratchy and very soft and warm. We all love it!
Baby Blanket - crochet design by www.llillabjorncrochet.com

Colour Crafter yarn also comes in an enormous number of shades, so you can create lots of color combinations: from calm and pastel, to “crazy” and vibrant. You can have a look at color charts and choose your own shades at Wool Warehouse* and Deramores* (both in UK with international shipping), Loveknitting* (US), Knotty House* (Canada) or in your local Scheepjes shops.

I will not tell you more by now. Except of that new pattern will be free (on my blog) and made in a very interesting and new technique for me. Come to my blog next week to see reveal of my new blanket.

Sunny Mandala: new life of an old overlay crochet pattern

$

I discovered overlay crochet almost 4 years ago, and it was love from the first glance. It changed my thoughts about crochet in general and inspired to take first steps in my own designing. I was impressed by overlay crochet mandala’s and could not stop staring at the variety of stitches and unexpected changes of colors. Sunny Mandala was one of my own first creations, and still one of my favourite.
Sunny Mandala - overlay crochet pattern - original design by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Sunny Mandala overlay crochet pattern was released in late 2014, in the times of my early steps of designing and learning photography. I decided to remake it with different yarns and to provide a new photo-tutorial in better quality (with many more pictures in happy rainbow colors). Written instructions have been also edited and improved. And I believe that now the pattern is easy to follow, and mandala better keeps the round shape.
Sunny Mandala - overlay crochet pattern - original design by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Another reason why I have decided to republish this pattern is that I wanted to adjust stitch counts on some rounds to make Sunny Mandala suitable for Dandelion Border and Joana’s Border. With the revised copy of the pattern you can square this mandala up (tom make it a center of a blanket) or enlarge it into a round rug.

Revised pattern is available both on Ravelry and Etsy and you will save 30% through Monday, June 26. No coupon code needed. If you purchased this pattern previously on Ravelry – an updated copy will be automatically added to your library. And if you purchased it on Etsy – please, contact me and I will e-mail you new copy of this pattern.
Sunny Mandala - overlay crochet pattern - original design by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Stone Washed yarn by Scheepjes was chosen for a new birth of Sunny Mandala. If you haven’t heard about this yarn before – please, check my review HERE. New shades were released not long ago and I used some of them for my mandala. Now Stone Washed palette is not so mute and dusty anymore, and I thought it’s a good choice for a bright overlay mandala.
Sunny Mandala - overlay crochet pattern - original design by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

You can have a look and purchase Stone Washed yarn in local Scheepjes shops and also at Wool Warehouse* and Deramores* (both are UK with international shipping), Loveknitting* (US) and Knotty House* (Canada). You can create your own Sunny Mandala in any color combination. For mine I used the following shades: 805, 807, 816, 833, 827, 830 – exact yardages are given in the pattern.
Sunny Mandala - overlay crochet pattern - original design by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Sunny Mandala overlay crochet pattern is aimed to intermediate crocheters, but “adventurous” beginners should also handle it without major problems, as only usual stitches are used here. And the only difference is in the way you attach them (see all information about overlay crochet technique HERE).

I hope you will enjoy the pattern!

Nya Mosaic Blanket: reveal

$

Last week I told you a story about our family trip to Germany, to Legoland. It was our first long trip by car and I didn’t want to be too bored, so I chose to crochet instead. Luckily lots of skeins in different colors were with me, and new blanket design was born. I know I promised you the pattern soon, but we’ve just arrived to Belarus to see my parents, and life became a bit chaotic. I will share free pattern with you very soon. But so far I thought you would like to have a look at a completed blanket.
Nya Mosaic Blanket - free crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I truly enjoyed working on this blanket and playing with colors. I have discovered a new (to me) crochet technique recently. It allows to work from charts, as in corner-to-corner for example. So in fact it opens endless designing possibilities, as you can create your own chart, and your own unique blanket.

Nya Mosaic Blanket - free crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I don’t know a name for this technique. You were trying to guess what it is, and it does look like interlocking crochet, indeed. But I think it’s not. I believe the idea of interlocking crochet is to create reversible fabric with same pattern on both sides but in different order of colors. And this blanket has right and wrong side, so I think it’s not interlocking. It reminds me of an overlay crochet with just a small difference. Chain stitches are involved here, and fabric is not stiff at all. And you can crochet from chart. Well, you will see everything yourself when the pattern is finally released (and I hope it won’t take long).
Nya Mosaic Blanket - free crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I didn’t have much time to finish the sample, so I went for a baby size, and my blanket is approx. 84 cm x 104 cm (33” x 41”). The blanket consists of several geometrical stripes and dividers, and can be made in any size (width or length).
Nya Mosaic Blanket - free crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

I used Colour Crafter yarn by Scheepjes* (DK weight) in 7 colors, but you can of course choose more or less shades. I would recommend taking soft yarn in solid shades for this blanket.

The pattern is on its way! See you very soon :)

Nuts about Squares CAL: Border

If you are reading this blog post, you are most likely following Nuts About Squares CAL. And if not – be sure to check it out! This CAL is about incredibly beautiful blanket made of squares by different designers and put together by Esther Dijkstra of It’s All In A Nutshell. Esther chose each square carefully, so that altogether they “play” in harmony. This CAL is about structure, texture and different techniques. A true crochet adventure! Read my interview with Esther HERE to learn more about her idea.

When Esther asked me to design a border for her blanket, I couldn’t resist. Of course! Such a honor! Esther asked for something textured but simple at the same time to frame the entire blanket and to support square patterns. And I gave it a try in overlay crochet.

This border was designed especially for Nuts About Squares CAL (squares with 44 stitches on each side) but you can use it for any blanket! The only important thing you should keep in mind is that stitch count on the first round, which should be multiple 4 plus one stitch.

You will need yarn in 4 shades for this border. Please, check Esther’s blog HERE to get complete information about colors and yardages for each of three color ways (and just to remind you, kits for NAS blanket are available at Wool Warehouse* and Deramores* (both are located in UK and ship orders internationally).

Video tutorial for the border is available HERE.

Pattern Notes

• Nya Mosaic Blanket is a repeating pattern of geometric stripes (chart) and dividers. Each geometric stripe is made with yarn in two shades.

• You can either follow the chart or written instructions.

• Ch1/ch2 in the beginning of each row doesn’t count as a st. So first sc/dc of each row is made in first stitch of previous row.

• All dc’s are made in sts of same color from 2 rows below – always in front of work.

• Change color on the last yarn over when there are still 2 loops on hook. Yarn is changed after every 2 rows.

Reading the Chart

• Chart is read from bottom to top. Each row in chart represents two rows of same color. Rows on the RS (1,2,3, etc.) are read from right to left, and rows on WS (1a, 2a, 3a, etc.) are read back across from left to right. The first square of each row shows which color is used for 2 rows (1-1a, 2-2a, 3-3a, etc.)

• Each square of the chart shows 1 stitch or 1 skipped stitch. When squares of different colors appear in the row – they should be skipped. So instead of working them – make a number of ch (always 1 ch more than a number of skipped sts – to prevent your work from pulling) and skip needed sts. So for 1 skipped st you will ch2, for 2 skipped sts – ch3, for 3 skipped sts – ch4, etc.

• On next row on RS when you will crochet with different color – you will make dc in these skipped sts from two rows below. Dc’s are always made in front of your work, in front of chains of previous rows, so spacs are always skipped. (see pics below).
Nya Mosaic Blanket - FREE crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Following chart: start with “Begin” section, then repeat “One Repeat” six or more times (for a larger blanket), and finish with “End” section.
Nya Mosaic Blanket - FREE crochet pattern by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Common Mistakes:

• When working on RS it is very important to skip correct number of stitches. The mistakes can appear when you finish dc, make several chains and then skip wrong number of stitches (or don’t skip them at all) behind or just next to dc. (pic 1)

• When working on WS be sure to make sc in EVERY st without missing any. Sometimes dc can be “hiding”, so be sure not to miss them. (pics 2-3)

New CAL is coming soon…

Today is the day! Can you keep the secrets? For me it’s an unbelievably difficult task. But I have been keeping a secret for almost 8 months working very hard behind the scenes. And today I can finally tell you: new CAL is coming soon!!! I have been working on this new design since early January. Lots of frogging and remaking was involved, but I am very happy with the final results. A full reveal will be waiting for you in a week here on my blog (so stay tuned not to miss it). And today I will show you a few sneak peeks.
Spirits of Life CAL by www.lillabjorncrochet.com. Free crochet wrap pattern

What will it be? It will be a wrap! A large, very soft and draping, cozy wrap made with two very different Scheepjes yarns: Spirit and Catona (reviewed HERE and HERE). Though I can’t take the full credit for this idea to mix two different yarns. When we were chatting with Esther of It’s All In A Nutshell a while ago I told her about my creative idea, and I also expressed my doubts about which yarn to choose.
Spirits of Life CAL by www.lillabjorncrochet.com. Free crochet wrap pattern

We have discussed it and came to a conclusion that since it’s a large wearable project, a light weight yarn with good yardage should work best for it. And Esther said: “Maybe you should look into Spirit?” And then: “Oh, and you can actually combine it with Catona. That will give a nice mixture of textures”. And I made my choice at once.

I can’t tell you much about this project right now. Let’s save some excitement for later. But what I would like you to know is that coming CAL will be a true crochet adventure. I mixed several crochet techniques together, but still tried to keep the patterns easy enough, so that Advanced beginners can try them out.
Spirits of Life CAL by www.lillabjorncrochet.com. Free crochet wrap pattern

The CAL will begin on October 18th , 2017 and will run for 9 weeks. It will be FREE and each part will be released on my blog weekly. The CAL will be translated into several languages. And there will be ready kits available for purchase - produced and nicely packed by Scheepjes. The kits will be sold by local Scheepjes store as well as large retailers including Wool Warehouse (HERE)* (located in UK with international shipping). The kits will be available for sale on September 27. But you can sign up at Wool Warehouse web-site now and they will notify you by e-mail when kits are live.

Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: reveal!

I know that since last week you have been waiting for a full reveal of my new Spirits of Life CAL. Thank you very much for a very warm and lovely feedback. And thank you for being patient. I’ve got lots of questions, and I will try to answer at least some of them in this post.

Spirits of Life CAL was inspired by Native American textile and fiber art. Recently I have been looking a lot into this theme. My aim was not to copy exact patterns and to reproduce them. Instead I was trying to translate the same feeling through my wrap. Each element and pattern doesn’t have any meaning. It’s just my own perception and imagination. :)

As you may probably know this CAL will be about the wrap. In fact it is a large (approx. 63cm x 180cm) rectangle shawl which can be worn both as a wrap and as a scarf, for example. In the pictures below you can see that the length is enough to wrap it around the shoulders.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Spirits of Life wrap comes in three colour ways: Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirit of the Orchid. Each sample is made with mixture of two Scheepjes yarns: Spirit and Catona (reviewed HERE and HERE), to imitate mute and semi-colored effects of traditional textile pieces. I have worked with both yarns before and truly love their look and the feel. The mixture of soft and slightly fluffy Spirit and stiffness and rich colors of Catona gave the wrap a very nice warmth and excellent drape!
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Official kits produced and nicely packed by Scheepjes in all three colorways are already available for pre-order via some local stockiest (also at Knotty House* (Canada) and will be available for purchase at large retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE* (international shipping), Loveknitting* (US) on September 27th, 2017.

And while waiting for the start date, you can add this CAL to your queue on Ravelry HERE.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - kit

Just to remind you, the CAL will begin on October 18th, 2017 and will run for 9 weeks. Last part will be released on December 13th, just in time to finish your wrap for Christmas – for yourself or for friends and family members.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

The patterns/tutorials will be released here on my blog weekly. They will be FREE and translated at least to 10 languages: English UK and US, Dutch, Spanish, German, French, Hebrew, Swedish, Afrikaans, Polish and Finnish. Tutorials will include written instructions, charts and progress pictures and will be accompanied by partial video’s to guide you through every step. The CAL will be hosted in Official CCC Social group on Facebook (by Susan Cutrer) where you will find the answers to all questions and get full support from admins and other members.

You were asking which crochet level this CAL is aimed to. This is a very difficult question. Spirits of Life is definitely not a total beginner’s project. But no intricate stitches were used to crochet this wrap. All stitches are very basic and only their placement can be tricky sometimes. If you are an “adventurous beginner” and like to learn new things, you can try this CAL out.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Three different techniques were mixed together: Overlay Crochet, Mosaic Crochet and C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. In coming weeks I will keep you posted with details about the techniques and will give you links to tutorials, so that you can practice and see if this CAL is right for you.

I hope I could answer your possible questions. More information and details will come in next weeks. And here is the picture of me wearing Spirit of the Orchid. I am sending many thanks to my friends @Oleg Ignatovich (photographer) and @Natasha Zus (model) for such atmospheric pictures. Be sure to check their Instagram to see lots of other wonderful pictures!

Brioche Crochet: to support the trend

Have you noticed that brioche patterns are very trendy nowadays? I can see knitted brioche shawls, scarves and clothes everywhere. As well as brioche interior accessories, such as rugs and pillows… If you search for “brioche” (on Pinterest, for example) you will see loads of knitting projects. And not so many crochet… I thought it’s unfair and decided to recreate brioche looking pattern in crochet.
Brioche Waves crochet pattern can be used for everything: blankets, cowls, scarves, trivets, potholders, rugs... you name it. The pattern comes in two versions: "airy" with holes and well draped, and "overlay" which creates a firm and sturdy fabric. Originally designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Actually this is not my first attempt. Earlier this year two Labyrinth patterns were released – for a mandala which later was grown into a rug. I used overlay crochet for that, and crocheted fabric turned out very sturdy and stiff. Just great for pillows and rugs, but maybe not very suitable for blankets, and no good at all for wearable accessories.

So this time I decided to go further and develop a slightly different technique which allows crochet light, airy and well draping pieces. And more than that – I wanted to figure out how to make brioche crochet in rows (and not in rounds as you can usually see). And Ta-dah!!! Here is my newest Brioche Waves crochet pattern.

You can find the pattern both on Ravelry HERE and Etsy HERE. Hurry up as it is discounted only this weekend (through Monday, August 28)!! And you will save 25% (no coupon code needed).

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue

What is so special about this pattern? First of all I like the feel very much. When I show my new blanket to friends, they like it. But when they touch it – they love it. I wish I were a skilled writer to describe the feeling with words… Maybe pictures will help? The fabric is made up with two layers which are interlocked. The wrong side of the blanket reminds me of fish gills. It is very soft and touchable. And secondly, you can use this pattern for almost ev-ry-thing! Blankets, cowls, pillows, trivets, potholders, rugs, bags… you name it. You will easily adjust it for any width and length.

Brioche Waves pattern contains two versions: “airy” – which I used for a blanket, and “overlay” – with no chains and holes. Great for home accessories. You can see the difference of the wrong sides below.

The pattern also includes complete instructions to finish the blanket and the cowl shown in this post.

Because in fact you crochet the entire piece with only front post stitches, it is better to choose very soft and light yarn for this project. Heavier yarns will work well for smaller project (like my Brioche Cowl for example made with Merino Soft* yarn by Scheepjes – reviewed HERE). But for the blanket I would recommend yarn with very good yardage.

I wanted to play with colors and for my blanket I chose Colour Crafter* (reviewed HERE) and Colour Crafter Velvet* yarn by Scheepjes. They both are premium acrylic and come in the same yardage and in nicely matching colors. The only difference is that dying process for Velvet yarn is a bit different, and it makes Velvet a bit stiffer than regular Colour Crafter. Ideally you will need equal amount of two shades for Brioche Waves pattern. But because of this difference you will need a little bit more of Velvet.

Let me show you examples of what Brioche Waves pattern can be used for.

1. The stitch pattern was specially designed for a blanket, so you can of course make a blanket with it. I should warn you that because you make lots of front post stitches this project is not quick. Even for me it was a bit slow but the final result is worth it! The huge advantage is that you are using both yarns at once. No need to break the yarn and weave in tails. So your time is saved already!

2. You can use Brioche Waves pattern for smaller projects, like cowls and scarves. I made one for myself.

3. As already mentioned, the pattern contains “overlay version” which creates a sturdy and stiff fabric. Good for different kinds of trivets and potholders.

I made a small sample in overlay crochet (with Stone Washed* yarn - reviewed HERE) and then played with it on computer to see how it may look as a rug. Pretty nice, isn’t it?

4. Overlay version is also perfect for bags. Hilde Tindlund was helping me to test the pattern. And look what a wonderful Zebra Clutch she made! You will find all details (and more pictures) on Hilda's project page HERE on Ravelry.

As promised I continue to post about Spirits of Life Wrap CAL coming soon. This article contains Important Notes about technique used in the pattern and a list of abbreviations (links to translations are given below). Before you actually join the CAL or purchase the kit, I would HIGHLY recommend you to study this information thoroughly and try your hand on each technique.

Since reveal of Spirits of Life Wrap a few weeks ago (you can see pictures HERE), I have received lots of questions about the difficulty level of this project. I can’t tell you exactly if this project is right for you or not, as all intermediate and even beginner patterns vary and differ a lot.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com.

To help you find the answer, I have created a list of techniques used in my CAL. I didn’t use any intricate or very difficult stitches. All stitches are usual and very common, but sometimes their placement can be tricky. Please, study the information below and make small samples in each technique. I would say that most of intermediate crocheters should handle them without any problem. Is you are an “adventurous” beginner who like challenges and to learn new things – you can absolutely try this out as well.

Note: translations to other languages are being revised at the moment and will be added shortly. Thank you for being patient.

Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com.

Three techniques were used to create this pattern: Overlay crochet, Mosaic crochet and C2C (corner-to-corner crochet). If you make a small sample in each technique and feel comfortable with following instructions – then you can be sure Spirits of Life CAL is right for you. If you have any difficulties, you still have enough time to practice and improve your skills.

A very important note for those who will be doing the CAL with official kits by Scheepjes. As in any other CAL the gauge plays a VERY important role. In each part of the pattern I will give you exact amount of every shade used (in grams). If you stay within this amount – you will be fine and yarn will be enough. If you use more yarn, you have a risk to run out of some shades…
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL - designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com.

I know that many of you are interested in exact shades and yardages of Spirit and Catona used for Spirits of Life Wrap. At the moment I am not free to reveal this information, but it will be released later. So please, be patient.

Just to remind you, Spirits of Life wrap comes in three colour ways: Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirit of the Orchid. Each sample is made with mixture of two Scheepjes yarns: Spirit and Catona (reviewed HERE and HERE).

You can this project to your Ravelry Queue.

Official kits produced and nicely packed by Scheepjes in all three colorways are already available for pre-order via some local stockiest (also at Knotty House* (Canada) and will be available for purchase at large retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE* and Deramores* (both in UK with international shipping), Loveknitting* (US) on September 27th, 2017.

The CAL will be hosted in Official CCC Social group on Facebook which will provide you with needed information and support. However to join the CAL you don’t need to be on Facebook or member of this group, as each part will be published in free access on my blog.

I will give you more details about the CAL soon (like materials, gauge and other). And we begin on October 18th!

Scheepjes Bloggers Days, and My First Steps in Freeform Crochet

$

Freeform crochet is something I have been observing for a very long time. If you open the web you will see enormous number of shawls, bags, cardigans, hats… anything! Made in freeform crochet. It is a truly unique way to express yourself, as no pattern is needed. And you just follow the sound of your soul. Though there are no strict rules, I have noticed that some shapes and stitches are repeated often, and I have always wanted to try them out. And the concept of freeform crochet in general.

Do you dream of something? Then there is a chance your dreams will come true one day. And that happened to me. At the moment I am sitting at the Copenhagen airport, after an impressively creative weekend spent with my blogger friends at Scheepjes HQ in the Netherlands. Yes, that was another Bloggers Days time full of fantastic yarns, lots of crochet, learning and… laugh. I am in love with these ladies! They all are true inspiration!

I could go for a walk down in Copenhagen center or could take an immediate train to Malmö. But instead I decided to sit down for a few hours, and to write this blog post. To share my feelings and impressions about the people I met, and new things I’ve learnt.
Maria, Tammy and Carmen are discussing spinning

The agenda of Bloggers Days was known in advance and I was very looking forward to both workshops: a chart making by Kirsten of Haak Maar Raak. And freeform crochet by José Dammers. You may know Kirsten’s work already, she creates very stylish designs full of color and geometry. And she is also the designer behind latest Scheepjes CAL – Hygge.
José Dammers, Christa, Susan and Dedri

And José Dammers was a new name to me, I have not seen her work before. And when I saw it – I could not really believe she started to crochet just 2 years ago. And from the very beginning she looked into freeform crochet. I had a chance to see her stunning shawls and bags for real. And also her recent art objects – crochet portraits of David Bowie and Frida Kahlo. Don’t they look amazing? You should check out José's Instagram page HERE for more beautiful projects.

Guess who is behind the crochet face in the picture below. A small hint – she is a veeeeeeery known blogger. And a fantastic crochet designer. And you know her for sure!

(Ok! It’s Dedri Uys)

After an introduction we were invited to try freeform crochet ourselves. To make a test sample (which can absolutely grow into a finished crochet project in the end) you need five different yarns in several shades. In close or contrast shades – it doesn’t matter, but the key idea is to use yarns in different weights and with different texture: thick, fluffy, lace. Anything!
Scheepjes Bloggers practicing at freeform crochet :)

You also need a special kind of a crochet hook to complete bullion stitches. Because I only had a hand luggage I didn’t dare to bring one on the airplane, as it reminded me of a surgery instrument. And I was afraid I would not be allowed to bring it onboard. Want to know how much time it took me to master bullion stitch? I am not sure myself, but it felt like forever! Other ladies were very excited too. And we didn't really pay much attention to anything around us... Just look at the table after an hour of "practice"...

What else do you need for a freeform crochet? Nothing! No pattern, no rules, no right and no wrong. Just the mood. Which you should follow with your hands. For my highly organized nature it was not easy at all to switch off and not to think about stitch count or gauge. The only important thing is that your motifs should stay flat. In my opinion freeform crochet artists have achieved a certain level of freedom of mind. And I am making tiny step towards it.

And here is lucky Carmen together with José.

Anyway. I have finished my first freeform motif! A good start I think. And now I am dreaming about making a shawl in this technique. And as I know already, if you are dreaming your dreams come true at some point. Time for a cup of coffee. Next week is all mine. It’s time for me and for the sea. I might be not in touch for a while. But promise to come back sooooon.

River Washed: new yarn in a famous family

What innovative can be about yarn? Feels like nothing. Yarns differ in composition, they differ in colours. Different kinds of fibre are used to produce different yarns. They can be hand spun, or manufactured in large scales by machines. They can be hand dyed, yes. But still yarns remain yarns and seems like nothing can be invented. Right? Not really… And new River Washed yarn* by Scheepjes is a very nice example.

River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com
It took more than 3 years to develop River Washed yarn – a new addition to famous Stone Washed line by Scheepjes (reviewed HERE). It’s same in weight, and same in construction. But very different in colour. It’s dyed differently: the cotton “cord” is dyed in one color and acrylic fluff has different, similar or very contrast, shade. And this is what makes River Washed yarn unique.
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

First I saw it at Bloggers Days several weeks ago but unfortunately didn’t have chance to play with, though my hands were itching in excitement. I was looking at this yarn and was trying to guess if it’s more “knitting” or “crochet”. And yesterday (finally!) a parcel with samples came to my city. Scheepjes was very kind to send me skeins in all 14 shades to play with and maybe to design something. (…and just to prevent possible questions – YES! I have a design in mind already!)
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

River Washed has the same feel as Stone Washed - cotton blend 70% cotton, 30% acrylic (50g/1.76 ounces with 130m/142 yards). And also comes in XL version - aran weight for warm, winter, chunky projects (50g/1.76 ounces, 75m). The stitch definition is perfect. I made a few samples in both knit and crochet to show you “magic” of the colors. I only tried regular version so far, but XL will look exactly the same, just larger size of the hook and needles will be needed.
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

So crochet. Because River Washed is a bit fluffy, and fluff fills gaps between the stitches, I would say 4mm (G) crochet hook is best. At least I would not recommend a smaller hook, especially if you want to make shawls or garments. The crochet fabric might turn out quite stiff. Here are three samples:
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

…and a close up for you to see the play of two shades in each skein. This yarn is perfect for beginners who are not very experienced with different types of stitches. As you can see even with basic crochet (or knitting) stitch the fabric looks unique. River Washed is a self patterning yarn, I would say. But it will definitely look great with some intricate stitches and techniques as well. Brioche maybe?
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

And knit! Though I am primarily a crocheter but I should admit River Washed yarn is perfect for knitting. I tried 3mm and 4mm needles, and both fabrics are very draping and super soft – either in garter or stocking stitch.
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Shade 951 (Amazon) is my favourite so far… Or maybe not… I am lost! I love all of them!
River Washed - new yarn by Scheepjes with unique colors. Review by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

As mentioned above River Washed yarn by Scheepjes comes in 14 shades (and each one is named after a famous river). Not so many you would say. But because every skein is in fact a mixture of two colors, the color variations can be many. I expect long hours of swatching and I am very curious to see how different skeins will look together.

River Washed yarn is already available in local Scheepjes shops and via larger retailers: Wool Warehouse* (international shipping) and Knotty House* (Canada).

And I will be back to swatching now. Wip of a new design will come soon!

A Different Granny Square: overlay and draping!

$

For me crochet design is about colors, stitches and shapes. And shape is probably the first thing I decide about, then choice of the colors comes, and then a perfect combination of stitches is looked for. There are quite a few shapes used in crochet design (and with freeform crochet you can basically create any shape at all): circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, octagons… But in my opinion square shape is the most basic and widely used. What do we try first when we want to learn crochet? A granny square, of course! It teaches us how to crochet flat and in round, how to join rounds and how to make increases in the corners. Granny squares use basic crochet stitches, but crochet squares can be more than that!
A Different Granny Square uses overlay crochet technique with very soft and draping background. Perfect for blanket! Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

When I started to design crochet three years ago I looked into round shapes and overlay technique. I have created several mandala’s (Dandelion, Joana’s, Spanish, Sunny, Labyrinth) which can be either enlarged into bigger circles or squared up with Dandelion Border. I’ve always thought about mandala’s as round pillows, chair pads, pillow decorations, maybe. But I was amazed by the amount of blankets people have created using overlay crochet mandalas. Look at Sophie Loves Lilla Bjorn Winter Blanket (by Emma Aldous), or Celtic Mandala Blanket (by Laura, aka @Taemombo on Ravelry), for example.
A Different Granny Square uses overlay crochet technique with very soft and draping background. Perfect for blanket! Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Generally pieces created in overlay crochet are quite stiff, because background is worked with single crochet stitches and long, complex stitches are added above. Unless very soft and draping yarn is used, entire blankets in overlay crochet might feel too stiff and heavy. And I was wondering how it is possible to solve this “problem”.
A Different Granny Square uses overlay crochet technique with very soft and draping background. Perfect for blanket! Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

And I came up with an idea of square pattern which uses overlay crochet with a very draping background, and lacy parts. And this is how A Different Granny Square pattern was born. It is already available for purchase via Ravelry (HERE) and Etsy (HERE) and is offered with 30% discount through Monday, October 2, 2017 (no coupon code needed). After that date the pattern will be listed at a regular price.

A Different Granny Square uses overlay crochet technique with very soft and draping background. Perfect for blanket! Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

A Different Granny Square consists of three parts: floral center, lacy border and overlay zig-zag border. They give you lots of possibilities to play with sizes. I believe this square is PERFECT for blankets, and I wish I have time in the future to complete one for myself. You can either crochet and join entire squares (each approx. 37cm (14.5in) large when made with DK yarn and 4mm crochet hook). Or another option is to leave out the border and only use central floral motifs which are very draping as well.
A Different Granny Square uses overlay crochet technique with very soft and draping background. Perfect for blanket! Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com

You can of course use A Different Granny Square in a variety of other ways: as decorations for pillows and chair pads (with crochet fabric stitched onto the ready foam), as trivets, and other. I have hand stitched one of the squares onto ready fabric throw from IKEA to make a pillow for my friend.

I've made squares in different color palettes and also with one colour only (off white). And all of them play differently. Lori Baran who helped me with test, made her square in solid grey, and it looks amazing!

If you are interested, I used Soft Fun yarn* (DK weight) by Scheepjes and 4mm (G) Amour Clover hook* (my favourite brand and type). For one square you will need approx. 88g of yarn which is almost 2 skeins if only one shade is used. And here are shades for grey and emerald square (you will find all information about “Fall” version of this square in the pattern): Yarn A - 2515, Yarn B - 2532, Yarn C - 2531, Yarn D - 3535, Yarn E - 2466.

The pattern is intermediate. Full version contains lots of detailed pictures so you have no chance to be lost. It doesn’t take long to finish, and finished project can make a wonderful (Christmas?..) gift.

What’s inside the kit?

I chose two different yarns for this project, as I think they play together perfectly. And they also translate a certain mood. It’s Spirit and Catona (reviewed HERE and HERE). These yarns are very different in look and feel, but together they create a very light, warm, draping and textured fabric.

Spirits of Life CAL comes in three colorways: Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirit of the Orchid. Each of them contains 4 shades of Spirit and 4 corresponding shades of Catona.

You will also find a ring inside the kit which we will use for a bonus project with yarn leftovers. Exciting? …But I cannot give you any further details on this… Let’s keep it a secret!

Spirits of Life CAL: GIVEAWAY!

As already mentioned in the latest blog post HERE Spirits of Life kits have arrived to stores and are already available for purchase. Scheepjes kindly shipped me Spirit of the Volcano kit to write an “open the box” blog post. But unfortunately it arrived too late, at the time when kits announcement was LIVE already. I thought it’s a pity to open such a beautiful box, and instead I’ve come up with a better idea! A Giveaway!
Spirits of Life CAL_kits and giveaway

I am constantly receiving private messages and e-mails asking if there will be a video support for Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. And today I am not only happy to say YES! But also to introduce my brand new channel launched literally yesterday. Come and see my first ever video HERE introducing the CAL.

To be honest, I have always thought I will never ever make any video in my life. I am so afraid of technology, and very often I feel like I can’t find common language with it. But when a new CAL idea came to my mind 9 months ago, I thought: Well, I will probably have to learn making videos. No more excuses here. And today (YAY!) I have uploaded my first video.

I still have to go a long way to make my channel something nice and useful. But now when I know how to use my camera and how to edit video clips – everything feels much easier. So at the moment and in next weeks before the CAL I will be putting video instructions together and I hope you will find them helpful. I also plan to add more videos in the future featuring crochet tips, tricks and (of course!) video tutorials for my patterns. A few ideas have been queued already.
Spirits of Life CAL_kits and giveaway

So GIVEAWAY! If you would like to win a Spirits of Life Volcano kit, please, a) subscribe to Lilla Bjorn YouTube channel and b) leave a comment below THIS presentation video.

The Giveaway will run through Monday, October 9th, 2017. And the winner will be randomly chosen and announced the next day.
Spirits of Life CAL_kits and giveaway

Please, note that this giveaway is open to people worldwide but I will be shipping the kit myself from Europe. It means it will take it longer to be delivered to remote parts of the world and you might not receive it just on time when Spirits of Life CAL begins. And just to remind you, it will happen on October 18th. Pretty soon!

Spirits of Life Wrap kits are available for purchase in local Scheepjes stores and via international retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE* and Deramores HERE* (both located in UK with international shipping), Lovektnitting HERE* (US – the kits are not up on the website at the time of posting) and Knotty House HERE* (Canada).

Materials: Yarn and Hook

As already mentioned, I used Spirit and Catona yarn by Scheepjes (reviewed HERE and HERE) in 8 corresponding shades. If you want to have all yarn in one place, you can order an official kit (still in stock at the time of posting). Read more about kits HERE.

Spirits of Life Wrap kits are available for purchase in local Scheepjes stores and via international retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE and Deramores HERE (both located in UK with international shipping), Lovektnitting HERE (US) and Knotty House HERE (Canada).

If you would like to support me and my blog, please, purchase the kits via links provided above. These links are affiliate, and I might be compensated with a tiny amount from each order. While you will not pay anything extra. Thank you in advance! :)

You can also purchase the skeins separately or use your own stash. Please, check exact yardages in the image below.

3.25mm (D) crochet hook is recommeded, but because your style of crochet might differ, you may need to go one or two sizes up or down. Please, make a swatch and see how it goes. Then you know which exactly hook you need.
Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: General information. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

Gauge

This part is probably the most important! The gauge for Spirits of Life CAL is:

20 stitches x 16 rows = 10cm x 10cm (4” x 4”) with one row of double crochet and one row of single crochet (US terms). In other words, every 2 rows should measure approx. 1.25cm (1/2”) in height.

The gauge is valid for both Spirit and Catona. But because Spirit is a little bit difficult to frog, maybe you should practice with Catona. But the CAL will begin with Spirit yarn. And first several rows will give your wrap necessary width.

PLEASE (!!!) take your time to practice and obtain as closest gauge as possible. I do understand that everyone has his/her own style of crochet. But Spirits of Life Warp was designed around certain gauge. The entire pattern is worked in different directions: from bottom to top, in squares, with C2C panels which are crocheted diagonally. And gauge is important for all parts to fit perfectly, so that in the end you get and ideal rectangle shape.

If your gauge is off, you will obviously need more yarn, and you will probably need to block every part more “aggressively” to fit given measurements. And if your gauge is totally off – you will need to improvise…:)

Please, don’t be scared, or worried, or concerned too much. It’s not that difficult to correct your gauge. Please watch this video by Esther Dijkstra explaining what “golden loop” is and what impact it has on the height of the stitches.

If your sample is getting too high, while completing the stitches you need to lift every loop a little bit less than you usually do, and that should help your stitches to become shorter. And vise verse for too short stitches.

If you can’t do anything about the gauge – please make sure it is bigger or smaller proportionally. It means if you sample is higher, it should also be wider. Then there is a better chance all parts will fit together well. But again, you will need more yarn.

In Part 1 I will give you exact amounts of each shade used for every part. PLEASE, carefully take notes about your own yarns to be on track. But I will also come back to this later, when Part 1 is released next week.

Techniques

Three different crochet techniques were used to create Spirits of Life Wrap pattern (exciting, right?): Overlay crochet, Mosaic crochet and Corner-to-corner crochet (C2C). I would highly recommend you to check Important Notes HERE (in different languages) and try making a small sample in every technique. Please, use your stash (not the kit yarn) to practice!

Spirits of Life Wrap CAL: Part 1

Welcome to the Spirits of Life Wrap CAL. We begin today with Part 1 (yay! Finally!). Before you actually start crocheting, pretty please, check General information for the CAL HERE and make a gauge swatch. Then, please, carefully read information below.
Spirits of Life CAL: Part 1. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

I hope that you are well prepared and that you practiced all three techniques introduced in the Important Notes HERE. Today’s part is a kind of relaxed. You will not be making any intricate stitches. It is more about getting used to the gauge and to different types of yarn. Part 1 consists of colorful stripes made with both Spirit and Catona yarns with a small zig-zag pattern in overlay crochet.
Spirits of Life CAL: Part 1. Designed by www.lillabjorncrochet.com in collaboration with Scheepjes

BEFORE you actually begin to crochet, please, make these two important things.

1. Organize your colors. Each color in the pattern is marked with the letter (A,B,C…). Please, make an organizer and match each letter with the exact yarn. Because corresponding shades of Spirit and Catona can look very similar in the pictures, I would highly recommend you to refer ONLY to written instructions, and not the pictures.

Below you will see the picture representing color change for each colorway (Lake, Volcano and Orchid). But this is just a small help for you, so that you don’t use a totally different color. But again (!) while changing colors, please, refer to written pattern!

Here is the color key (you will also find it in the written pattern):

And here is how my own “organizer” looks. Not fancy at all, but very helpful!

2. Please, remove labels from the skeins and weigh each and every one.

If you are using the kit it is very important that you use exactly the same amount of each color as given in the pattern. In the files below (choose your language and download it) you will find the chart with yarn amounts in grams. For all 9 parts!! Please, weigh your yarn before and after each part is finished and carefully takes notes about your amounts (you can put them into printed instructions into the same chart as mine). This will give you a very clear vision about how much yarn you used. And if you are on track or not.

I used 3.25mm (D) hook but you may need to go one-two sizes up or down to obtain correct gauge.

Here is written pattern for Part 1:

I have created a video tutorial to help you understand written instructions better. Because the pattern is quite straightforward, the video doesn’t contain step by step instructions for every row. The video is meant as an additional help.

As you may notice, the video doesn’t have sound… and this is not because of technical problem. It was done on purpose. There were many reasons why I decided not to add any voice explanations. One of them is the CAL is translated to many languages, and far not everyone is speaking English. Instead I tried to use a “universal crochet language” and my hands to explain the pattern. And hopefully you will find it helpful and useful!

This and all next video’s will be posted on my YouTube channel HERE.

Happy crocheting! Can’t wait to see your finished samples!! You can post them in Official CCC Social group on Facebook (official host of Spirits of Life CAL) and also in my Ravelry group HERE. Every week there will be a separate thread created for each Part of the CAL.

If you don’t have a kit but would like to purchase one, they are still available (at the time of posting) at Wool Warehouse HERE* (UK, international shipping) and Loveknitting HERE* (US).

Having Fun with C2C crochet

C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet technique is something new to me. I have seen lots of amazing afghans created by other people but my own acquaintance with C2C happened not so long ago. First time I tried it while making Last Dance on the Beach blanket (Scheepjes CAL 2016). My friend Carmen introduced a simple C2C square and I had lots of fun making it. And when I first made it myself C2C crochet technique didn’t seem so difficult and complicated anymore.
How to join as you go in C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. By www.lillabjorncrochet.com

Suddenly I felt confident enough and used it for several parts of Spirits of Life CAL which started this week (see Part 1 HERE). I wanted to recreate zig-zag pattern and C2C appeared to be the best and easiest “tool” for that. I’ve learned how to change the colors, and I also had to use a join as-you-go method which I have never tried before. If you follow Spirits of Life CAL you will be doing C2C parts in several weeks already.

Apparently there is not so much information about join as-you-go method for C2C crochet. I was lucky to find nice video-tutorials but they explain how to join the squares. I thought it would be nice to also try it with triangles maybe? Colorful triangles always look great in “patchwork” patterns. And I thought of creating a pillow cover using leftovers of Soft Fun yarn by Scheepjes and C2C.

What I am doing is definitely not an invention of something new. And most likely there are some tutorials about the same thing already. But I thought I would create my own – not just to show the joining method, but to show method for exact pattern.

I have remade my sample a few times already trying to understand the best way of joining triangles. And I think I am almost there. I can’t wait to finish the pillow and show it to you. And I will also complete a video-tutorial to guide you through every step I made.
